Vector & Bitmap Images

Vector Images


The main advantages of vector images are that they are scalable and easily editable.
The main disadvantages of vector images are that they are simple and a suitable application is needed to view and edit them.
The main uses of vector images are for things such as logo's and maps.
The main versions that vector images would be found/saved as are .ai, .eps, .3ds, .suf and .svg.
Applications in which vector images can be made on are Flash, Illustrator and Coral Draw.





Pixel/Raster/Bitmap Image


For Bitmap images the screen resolution should be 72dpi with the colours RGB and for print the resolution should be 300dpi with the colours CMYK.
The main advantages of bitmap images are that they are detailed and they include lots of colour.
The main disadvantages of bitmap images are that they start off large and can only be made smaller, not larger and also that they don't convert very well.
The main versions that bitmap images would be found/saved as are .jpg (for smaller file sizes) .png and .gif (both for simple images with not many colours) .bmp (for photos) .tif and .psd (Photoshop file).
